Personalised Number Plates - What If Your Car Is Stolen? By Kiran John
It's not pleasant to think that your car could be stolen. Unfortunately, over a third of a million cars are stolen in the UK each year. It's reasonable to conclude, then, that a number of those have a personalised number plate. A proportion of cars are, of course, recovered. But many are never returned to their rightful owner. So what happens to your personalised number plate if your car is stolen? And how do you make sure that, even if (worst case scenario) your car isn't restored to you, that your cherished number plate is? It may come as a shock that, if your car is stolen, you could lose your personalised number plate too. You'll need to tick all the DVLA's boxes to make sure that doesn't happen. So what should you do if your car is stolen? Of course the first thing you must do is inform the police. You will also need to inform the DVLA (in writing). You should do this straightaway...don't wait until for the usual 4-week insurance company's recovery window. If the car is not recovered, you will have to wait
for 12 months before you can reclaim the personalised registration number and have it assigned to your replacement vehicle. In order to do this, the following must apply: - you must have informed the police of the theft at the time it occurred
- the theft should be recorded at the DVLA for at least 12 months
- when your car was stolen, it should have had a valid MOT
- when your car was stolen, it should have had a current tax disc
- you should provide a letter from your insurance company stating that they have no interest in your personalised number plate
You should have all the necessary documents. Apply to the DVLA's Cherished Transfers section.Of course, you will be without the personalised registration number for 12 months...but that's better than losing it entirely! If your car is recovered in the meantime, and is effectively written off by your insurance company, you must apply to retain the personalised number plate before it is scrapped and a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) is issued.
