Car Number Plates - Keeping Within The Law

One of the most attractive parts of owning your own personalised number plate is the fact that they can quite often represent a word or name. However, it’s well worth making sure that you know the laws regarding the display of car number plates, because not conforming to the rules and regulations could land you with a nasty fine and you could even risk losing your plates. All car number plates must comply with The Road Vehicles Regulations 2001, which states that the registration mark must be owned in order to display the related acryclic number plate on your vehicle. The lettering must be black on a white plate for the front, and black on a yellow plate for the rear. Number plates must also conform to the British Standard in that they may only use the official, mandatory font (currently BS AU 145d). Lettering and spacing must also be of a set size, and you must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent any of the letters or numbers on your car number plates. For car number plates fitted after 1st September 2001, each character must have a height of 79mm and a width of 50mm (except for the figure 1 or letter I). The space between each character must be 11mm and the space between
groups of characters must be 33mm. Letters and numbers must also remain in the groups as stated on the certificate of entitlement. For example, 123 ABC cannot be displayed as 12 3ABC or 123A BC. Furthermore, car number plates must contain the name or trademark of the manufacturer or component supplier, as well as the postcode of the supplying outlet. A non-reflective border may be included, as well as the Euro symbol with national identification letters. No other markings or materials are allowed on the number plate. If you’ve already spent money on your personalised number plates, the last thing you will want is to be stung with a fine of up to £1,000 or to have your right to display the car number plates taken away from you.
